Tips For Success In Colleges
Nic Haffner

Did you know that lots of freshmen don't make it past their first year? Some can't make the adjustment to college life that is necessary for success. But, it's much easier than they may have realized. Your success in colleges or your failure can be determined in the first year. It's all up to you. If you start on the right foot, it's easy to keep it going and finally get that degree you are looking for! Probably the first thing you will do is pick your classes. Are you a morning person? If not, don't take early morning classes! You will have to drag yourself out of bed every morning and Mom won't be there to wake you up! Pick a schedule of classes that suits you. The same can be said for evening classes. It can be a drag after along day, to have to sit through a class. Think about your schedule needs when you pick classes. You know yourself and how you function, so plan accordingly. You may have the option to take a bunch of classes on certain days, and have the other days off. Or, you may be able to spead them all out through the week. Think carefully about what is best for you. For first time college students, it's probably best to have a couple classes every day, so you don't have especially tough days to get through. Think about your patterns and choose class times accordingly. Control your partying! You're not in high school anymore, and you will find somebody somewhere who wants to party every night of the week and every hour of the day. Save it for the weekends and keep it under control as much as possible. If you allow yourself certain times of the week (for example, Saturday) to go wild and party, you can go out and enjoy yourself knowing you don't have to wake up for class or do serious homework tomorrow. Try to get to know your profs. Get comfortable to the point that you can talk to them about concerns or ask questions. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions. Other students will thank you for it. But, don't brown-nose. Professors see right through that and they hate it as much as your classmates do. Use all the services on campus. There are tutors available, a student rec center, health center and all kinds of free services for students. Definitely use your counselors. It's their job to help students with the progress of their degree programs, and they can halp you with all kinds of adjustment issues. One good bit of advice concerning classwork is Stay Ahead. Try to keep on top of everything. Then, you can better deal with unexpected things when they come up. Being ahead of schedule will help you relax when those deadlines and tests come along. You also have some leeway in case you get sick or there is an emergency. You can make it in college! Believe in yourself and take care of business, and you will get through it with flying colors!
